Since the eighth century, when Islamic science began its 700-year domination of scientific development, astronomy has been of central importance. The need to determine accurately the specific times of day for Islamic prayers made it imperative that Muslims should master the tecqniques of mathematical and observational astronimy. Islamic astronomers, who were assigned to principal mosques, developed excellent computational techniquea and overall decline of Islamic needs untill almost the end of the nineteenth centtury. However, with teh gradual introduction of mathematical clocks and the equal-hour civil day, time reckoning has had to undergo a drastic change and with the spread of Muslims to many more parts of the world, it has become necessary to re-develop the underlying science and operational data suited to present time.
